Commencement High Table Gaudy, 2015
Moon Chun Memorial College held its traditional Commencement High Table Gaudy during the fourth week of Michaelmas Term, at the College Hall.
College Master, Professor Kevin Thompson specifically chose the term Gaudy, an adaption from archaic French ‘gaudir’, which means to 'rejoice' – as a special connotation that serves as a special celebration for a new freshmen cohort to foster new links with their upperclassmen and fellow academic advisors.
There were two very special performances by Ms. Sophie Chen, who played Chopin’s Fantaisie – Impromptu in C sharp minor, Op. posth. 66 1894; and Tchaikovsky’s Autumn (October) Song from Les Saisons, Op.37a, 1875.
Ms. Xinyue Sun, Soprano, graced center stage and performed two folk songs. The first was entiled: “My Dear is Washing Clothes at the River” (親疙瘩下河洗衣裳). The song was composed by Wei Jinying, arranged by Leung Yan Chiu, with lyrics by Zhang Wenxiu, has its origin from Shanxi Province. It describes the scene of a young lady washing her clothes by the river, whilst waiting for her imaginary prince to come.
The second piece was entitled: “Hill Song Expressing my Gratitude” (山歌好比春江水), which was composed by Lei Zhenbang, arranged by Leung Yan Chiu, lyrics by Qiu Yu. The song is considered as the most popular piece in the film, Lady Liu San (劉三姐), which describes a brilliant hill song singer and her antipathy towards her landlord.
The accompanying Ensemble for Ms Sun’s performance was conducted by MCM’s Artistic Director, Dr. Patricia Thompson, and musicians comprised: Erta Wei, Oscar Kuan, Violins; Alex Ao, Clarinet; Sherley Leong, Erhu; Lexi Wang, Pipa; Ray Cheung, Sanxian.
The climax of the evening was Andy McKee’s 2006 rendition of “Drifting”, a guitar performance by Corey Li, which earned the applause from everyone in the hall, and standing ovations from Profs. Martyn Evans and John Corbett.
Finally, the House Association Executive Committee, represented by Vanessa Yang, wished all the freshmen and College staff all the best in the coming year.
