Moon Chun Memorial College: A Common Wealth High Table
MCMC's High Table celebrated the fraternal associations between, and across, sovereign nations, China, Portugal, France, Australia, the United Kingdom, and United States. It drew together something of the Common Wealth of experience, storied histories, musical journeys and breadth of internationalism represented in College Membership, undergraduate, postgraduate and exchange, Resident and College Fellows. The College welcomed to High Table guests from the United States, Stephen F Austin University Texas. This, the second reciprocal visit by SFA and MCM College faculty, represents an emergent relationship between the two Colleges and Universities.Continuing close collaboration with Orquestra de Macau, was represented by Melody Wang, Associate Concertmaster, soloist in Vaughan Williams, The Lark Ascending, and David Rouault, Principal Trumpet, who performed with consummate aplomb at MCM College’s British High Table first semester.
A special welcome, was extended to Tomos Griffiths, Opera singer from Sydney Australia. Tomos performed the title rôle in Phantom of the Opera in London's Her Majesty's Theatre. Befitting journeys beyond borders, music ranged over Portuguese folksong (specially arranged by SFA graduate student for MCMC High Table), English pastoral and West End musical, to 20thCentury French light music.
Tomas Griffiths, Phantom of the Opera wearing the original mask from the London show, was followed by the faculty trio of Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) Texas, Dr. Jennifer Dalmas, violin, Prof. Christopher Ayer, clarinet, and Dr. Geneva Fung, piano, and the evening concluded in an authentic performance by Melody Wang and MCMC sophomore Sophia Chen recreating the1920 première of Ralph Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending.
